Science Fair and Family Engineering Night
Registration Is Now Open:
Online registration is now open for student projects. Take this opportunity to sign up and register using the tab above or by clicking here. All ages are welcome to participate!
Projects Should Be Student-Driven:
Project ideas should come from the students, and the projects should be driven by them. Parents can use their best judgment in deciding when to get involved, such as when there is a potential safety issue.
For especially young children, parents may provide some guidance, but it is important that the kids are able to call the projects their own.
Working With Someone Else:
Students in grades K-4 may work independently or with a partner who is also a student at Cougar Ridge Elementary School (for example, a classmate or sibling).
For groups of 2-4 people, each person should register individually online and indicate they are part of a group.
You may also conduct a project involving your whole class or scout troop! In this case, one project coordinator can register the entire group.
Choosing a Topic:
When it comes to choosing a topic, the sky is the limit! What have you wondered about? The best topics come from your own genuine curiosity about how something works, or why something is the way it is.
Click here for a list of project ideas. Click here for some examples of projects Cougar Ridge students have entered in the past. Click here for yet another example!
If you have trouble thinking of something on your own, visit the school or local LIBRARY.
You could also grab an adult and check out the internet, which is full of resources to help you choose a topic. Here are a few science links on the web.
Judging and Awards:
Our Science Fair and Family Engineering Night is non-competitive, as our goal is to encourage scientific exploration and discovery while promoting a deep, lifelong passion for science, technology, and/or engineering.
All participants will have the opportunity to present their projects to passersby during the actual event to receive an Oral Presentation ribbon.
For those interested in a more competitive environment, you may consider participating in the Washington State Science and Engineering Fair.
Delivering Your Project:
Bring your project to the Cougar Ridge Elementary School gymnasium between 5:30-6:30pm on Wednesday, March 25th, to check-in your display.
Please review the Science Fair and Family Engineering Night Safety Rules before submitting your work.
Volunteers Needed:
A sizable event like the Science Fair and Family Engineering Night isn't possible without the help of numerous volunteers.
If you can help on Thursday, March 26, 2020 and/or with setup the day prior, please register online to volunteer. If you missed the registration deadline, please contact us.
Please Follow the Guidelines:
To see how your project might look, click on this project board diagram. Don't forget to include your name(s), grade, and teacher somewhere on your presentation!
Students in grades K-4 are encouraged to explore any part of science that interests them. Students can present their discoveries on a standard 36" board or any smaller size board. The presentation may be freestyle, but it should include a title, pictures or drawings, observation, captions and/or comments.
All 5th grade students have received science project guidelines in class. Please refer to the rules specified by his/her teacher.
Go to our Tips page for detailed recommendations on creating your science project.
Picking Up Your Display Project:
Project pick-up is at 7:30pm on Thursday, March 26, 2020. Please try not to take your display home early because others want to see your work, too! (Tri-fold boards may not be carried on buses.)
Displays not picked up after the event, may be discarded.
What to Expect:
On the evening of the event, activities will span the area of the gym, MPR, and Ms. Goldfinch's 3rd-grade classroom.
MORE SPECIFICALLY: Projects will be displayed in the gym; hands-on activities will be offered in both the gym and the MPR. A high school Robotics Club will also be displaying their work.
NEW THIS YEAR!: A short science-themed film will be showing in Ms. Goldfinch's classroom that will cycle through during the entire evening for convenient family viewing. Please join us for this at any point during the event in classroom #162, which is down the first hallway to the right as you enter through the front entrance of the school.
5th GRADERS: Each 5th-grade student's project will include a QR Code that observers will be able to scan in order to view the respective student's classroom presentation.
We look forward to a fun evening of learning with our school community!
