Cougar Ridge Science Fair
Register to participate by Friday, February 12.
The registration deadline has passed, but we have extended online registration until February 14. If you are trying to register past this date, contact us.
Projects should be student-driven.
Project ideas should come from the students and the project should be driven by them. Parents should use their best judgment in deciding when to get involved, such as when there is a potential safety issue. For especially young kids, parents may provide some guidance, but it is important that the kids be able to call the project their own.
Working with someone else.
You may work on your project independently, or you may optionally work with a partner who is also a student at Cougar Ridge Elementary (for example, a classmate or sibling). For groups of 2-4 people, each person should register individually online and indicate they are part of a group. You can also do a project involving your whole class! (In this case, one project coordinator can register for then entire class.)
Need help choosing a topic?
When it comes to choosing a topic, the sky is the limit! What have you wondered about? The best topics come from your own genuine curiosity about how something works, or why something is the way that it is. Click here for a list of project ideas. Click here for some visual examples of work other kids have done. Or, modify the Flubber experiment at home to explore polymers further!
If you have trouble thinking of something on your own, visit your library or grab an adult and check out the internet, which is full of resources to help you choose a topic. For your convenience, we have listed a few science links on the Web.
Judging and awards.
Our science fair is non-competitive, as our goal simply is to encourage scientific exploration and discovery and promote a deep, lifelong passion for science. All entrants receive a Certificate of Scientific Achievement. Participants also will have an opportunity to briefly present their project to passersby at the fair, on March 4th, to receive an Oral Presentation ribbon.
Submit your project on March 3rd.
Bring your project to the Cougar Ridge gymnasium between 5:30 - 7:30 PM on Wednesday, March 3rd, to check-in your display.
Volunteers needed!
A big event like the science fair wouldn't be possible without the help of numerous volunteers. If you can spare an hour or two on March 3rd or 4th, and want to help, the online registration form has been disabled. Instead, please contact us.
Follow the guidelines.
To see how your project might look, click on this project board diagram. Don't forget to include your name(s), grade, and teacher somewhere on your presentation!
Students in grades K - 4 are encouraged to explore any part of science that interests them. Students can present their discoveries on the standard 36" board or any smaller size board. The presentation may be freestyle, but it should include a title, pictures or drawings, observation, captions and/or comments.
5th grade students have received science project guidelines in class. Please refer to the rules specified by his/her teacher.
Go to our Tips page for detailed recommendations on creating your science project.
